Plans under way for Indo US research on Ayurvedic Formula for Healthier Babies

Mumbai, 21st June 2008.

Dr. Palep’s Medical Research Foundation and Boston University Medical School are planning to collaborate on conducting a joint research on Capsules Sujat and Torchnil, Ayurvedic formulations aimed at developing healthier babies.

Chief investigators are Dr. H.S. Palep, Chairman, Dr. Palep’s Medical Research Foundation, Mumbai and Dr. Robert Saper, Associate Professor and Director, Integrative Medicine Department, Boston.

Based on his years of path breaking research, and the information available in the renowned Ayurvedic text Sushruta Samhita, Dr. Palep an eminent Obstetrician & Gynecologist and the only recognized former teacher at the Mumbai University in both Modern Medicine and Ayurveda Faculties, has devised two herbal formulations named Sujat and Torchnil . These Ayurvedic formulations are aimed at helping improve the fetal outcome with superior birth weights.  Large numbers of obstetricians and gynecologists have successfully prescribed the formulation to significantly improve the fetal outcome in pregnancies to prevent Low Birth Weight, PIH (Pregnancy Induced Hypertension) and Recurrent Pregnancy Loss. As described in Ayurveda, a 'Super Baby' is one superior in race endowed with health, intelligence, strength, voice and complexion, without any disease.

Dr. Robert Saper after having studied the published scientific reports made by Dr. Palep opines, “We are impressed with the reports and also believe that these Ayurvedic formulations can play a tremendous role in achieving the goal of a well baby born with good birth weight. The new joint study will perhaps help reconfirm earlier findings made by Dr Palep.”

Dr. Palep reveals, “The environment in the uterus holds the key to the future health of a baby, when he or she becomes an adult. Thus, the mother’s womb holds the key for the baby’s health in his future life. Ayurveda has described that good preconception and antenatal care programmes. This regimen could help in fulfilling the dream of a ‘Super Baby’ as described in Ayurveda. ”

Dr. Palep holds MBBS and MD in Modern Obstetrics and Gynaecology and is also highly qualified in Ayurveda. He is the founder of Dr. Palep’s Medical Research Foundation.

Dr Palep believes that the social and life style changes which have come about in recent years are responsible for the not so healthy babies in India. On an average Indian babies are known to have low birth weight of 2500 grams, almost a kilogram less that those of other ethnicities. Low birth weight is associated with the development of middle age diseases like diabetes mellitus, hypertensive atherosclerotic diseases and so on. Our country’s population has just crossed the one billion population mark. The estimation that every third Indian in middle aged population is likely to suffer from cardiovascular diseases in new millennium is spine chilling.

Prof. Barkar, very well known physician from UK had earlier confirmed his hypothesis of fetal origin of adult diseases (FOAD), which is in line with Ayurvedic concept of super baby, through researches spanning five continents.
